Meet the 2021 Art of Science Judges: Mary Ann Leavitt

Powerful Images can Uncover Meaning

Mary Ann Leavitt, Ph.D., is a first-time juror for the Art of Science photography contest, which is in its third year of showcasing research, scholarship and creative activity at FAU.

"The Art of Science helps us appreciate the beauty and complexities of our research endeavors," said Leavitt, an assistant professor in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, and a nurse scientist whose research involves interventions to help patients with heart failure live their best lives at home and stay out of the hospital. She is also a local actor with an appreciation of the beauty and power of written words and visual images.

"Aesthetic knowing is a way to discover deep meanings that may not be readily observable," she said. "Aesthetic knowing helps us uncover something new. Showcasing research scholarship in a photograph can aesthetically communicate understanding across the boundaries of language and discipline.
