Fall 2018, Boca Raton Campus, AL 248 Instructor: Dr. Irena Kofman ikofman@fau.edu, 954-755-3456, AL 248 Office Hours: Thursday 3:00pm-4:50pm COURSE OBJECTIVES: Piano Pedagogy 2 prepares competent piano teachers who are able to provide instruction to children, adolescents and adults in private studios and preparatory music schools. This course offers materials and techniques for teaching intermediate piano students of all ages. It examines a broad range of piano repertoire including intermediate level concertos and piano ensembles. The course includes the development of collaborative and accompaniment skills. It offers guidance in recognizing the individual needs and potential of every age group. In addition, the course explores practical tools and methods in the creation and maintenance of the studio setting, studio policy, yearly planning, budgeting, advertising, and recruiting. Through the duration of the course, students will have the opportunity to meet with and observe successful local piano teachers and outstanding pedagogues from across the country. COURSE PROCEDURES: Class sessions will be devoted to learning and discussion of all aspects of teaching piano. Weekly short quizzes, individual presentations, class participation and final exam are the assessment tools. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills to effectively teach intermediate level students. Students will be familiar with a broad range of piano repertoire including intermediate level piano concertos and ensembles. Students will be able to assess their pupil's individual needs and potential. Students will be able to create and maintain a private studio with knowledge of studio setting, policy, budgeting and advertising. GRADING: Grade will be based on: Regular attendance (40%); Regular preparation/individual presentations (30%); Short quizzes (20%); Exam grade (20%). Grades will be on the following scale: 90-100% = A; 80-89=B; 70-79=C; 60-69=D; 59 or below=F. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is required. More than three unexcused absences will result in the lowering of your final grade by one letter. The course will use Canvas for announcements, syllabus, and most of the course examinations, so make sure you know how to use this facility.
